A Wrench in Dems’ Wreckonciliation plans, but…

to impose national health care.

In a phone interview with TAS Thursday afternoon, Ryan said that he expects Democrats to begin the complex process on Monday, under which they would have the Budget Committee approve a phantom bill by midnight, which they will then send over to the Rules Committee. At that point, the Rules Committee will strip out all of the lan... read more

Some cold water thrown on the cramdown, ram-through, promise-we’ll-amend-it-later plans of the Democrat ruling majority. Curses, foiled again:

The Senate Parliamentarian has ruled that President Barack Obama must sign Congress’ original health care reform bill before the Senate can act on a companion reconciliation package, senior GOP sources said Thursday.

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) moved Thursday to put Senate Republicans on the defensive over health care, sending a letter to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in which he dared the GOP to vote against reform.

But hey, noooooobody’s talking reconciliation, right, Harry?

What now? With the Slaughter solution toast, Philip Klein reports on the House Dems’ next move coming Monday:

Rep. Paul Ryan says that Democrats are ready to ram a “shell” health care bill through the Budget Committee, on which he serves as ranking Republican member, to use as a vehicleRead more at michellemalkin.com

The Democrats came armed with sob stories (some of them, I hope, spurious), and the GOP came armed with facts. Just watch this six-minute tour de force by Rep. Paul Ryan and you’ll know who’s got a handle on the issues.

And by the way, what’s this about? It looks like Obama once purchased auto insurance with a high deductible and still holds a grudge against the company. Grow up and take some responsibility for your own bad decisions.

Its his [Chicago] way, or the highway.  Thanks, Smitty.

-Now a pictorial dispatch from the Summit…

President Obama walks in to the Summit.
‘Perhaps, if I throw one of my magical, mystical boogers at Paul Ryan, he’ll STFU’
‘Oh, man, I really gotta pass some gas — arugula and brie always do it to me.  I know: I’ll let go a ’silent killer’ and, when everybody looks this way, I’ll make like I smell it too, and blame in on that old f–k Biden.’Read more at thecampofthesaints.wordpress.com

Gergen: GOP “Had Their Best Day In Years”

There is little dispute on the left and right Harry Reid was one of the key losers today:

Harry Reid: Reid is the consummate behind the scenes player. And, today he reminded us again of why. Reid, who spoke within the summit's first hour, was extremely combative -- a tone that seemed out of step with the overall tenor of the meeting in which most attendees... read more

This was a surprising much talked about review from David Gergen
Tom Coburn: The Oklahoma senator is among the most conservative voices in Congress but his remarks emerged as a — rare — rallying point during the day. Coburn’s comments on the necessity of eliminating waste and fraud from the health care system drew nods from the president and kudos from a handful of Democratic and Republican politicians gathered at Blair House. In a room dominated by politicians trying to score political points or vamp for the cameras, Coburn stood out.
I’ve already mentioned Paul Ryan but here is a bit more:
Paul Ryan: Speaking of the Wisconsin Republican, it was clear that the president regards him as a serious thinker and adversary while his GOP colleagues often deferred to him on matters of health care and budget policy. Ryan helped burnish his credentials a rising star within the Republican party; he was partisan but drove his attacks using data rather than pure political rhetoric.

Small-Caps Get a Lift From Health Sector

Small-capitalization stocks jumped to 15-month highs, led by the health-care sector as the special election in Massachusetts raised speculation that changing congressional dynamics could favor private companies.

Health-care companies spearheaded the rally in small-cap stocks, as managed-care providers soared Tuesday, including HealthSpring, which climbed 4.3%, and Universal American, which rose 3.7%. Hospital providers dropped, however. Community Health Systems slipped 2.7%.

Speculation that more small-cap mergers and acquisitions could be in the works was fueled by large-cap Tyco International’s $2 billion purchase of Brink’s Home Security Holdings, a rival in home-security operations to Tyco unit ADT. Shares of Brink’s soared 32%.

A Foundation of Lies

However, the current Senate version of ObamaCare will cut reimbursements so low that many physicians will simply leave the practice of medicine. Physicians of far less quality will generally replace these physicians. Other physicians will stop seeing Medicare and Medicaid patients or significantly limit the numbers of such patients they will see.

Barack Obama voted “present” on crucial votes more often than just about any elected official.  This was simply a way to hide his true political ideology from those who voted for him.  People were blinded by “hope” and “change” and thought not of the consequences of electing Obama, a man without a solid foundation.

Nowhere is the dishonesty of Barack Obama and the current Democrats in the White House and Congress more blatant than with the push to pass ObamaCare in some form or fashion.  ObamaCare is all about the gain of real power over the people and nothing about giving the people better health care.

On at least 8 separate occasions, as posted on the Drudge Report, candidate Barack Obama promised that the Congressional committee debates and hearings on ObamaCare would be open and fully available for coverage on C-Span.
Even Nancy Pelosi tried to distance herself from Obama on this issue.
Obama promised the American people that they would not loose their doctors under ObamaCare.Read more at blogs.lubbockonline.com

Papa B’s Predictions for 2010

Russia and China know out that if Israel goes to war, everyone gets involved. And we .....we do have 200,000 military close to the Iranian border.

With respect to politics, Papa B goes on to hope for some sort of "centrist consensus", but we all know that must be satire.

1. The world and our economy is going to get uglier. The crushing debt will impact virtually every aspect of the economy.
2. Real estate will get worse. As leases expire, malls and commercial property will get darker.
3. Health care will pass, at least in some form.
4. Lots of trade wars… and it will get ugly with China.
5. Terrorism is a real threat… the politics of Gitmo and Holder have had an impact on our entire security infrastructure. Terrorists think we are weak and our own citizens will ask, “what’s the point?” If anything will truly impact the next presidential election, this and immigration will be the levers. Some jihadist will cross the border and commit a terrorist act and, all of a sudden, we’ll realize we are vulnerable. Combine this with the fact that illegals are taking jobs… and you will see another backlash.
6. The issues with Iran… will be resolved either because they change internally (low probability) or the world steps in.Read more at directorblue.blogspot.com

Command and Control

“This is something the party has wanted since Franklin Roosevelt.” In this view, losses are just the price of doing something great and historic. (The strategist also noted that it’s easy for Waxman and Pelosi to say that, since they come from safely liberal districts.)

Byron York gets close:

To some observers, the Democrats’ race to pass national health care seems irrational — even suicidal. Don’t party leaders understand how much the public opposes the bills currently on the table? Don’t they know that voters are likely to take their revenge at the polls next year? Given that, why do they keep rushing ahead?

Like the EPA’s recent Declaration of Despotism, asserting regulatory control over the very air we breathe, it is about, as an Obama regime goon recently put it, “command and control.” Period, full stop, end of story
This Leftist megalomania is only touched on in York’s piece, but it’s central to understanding what’s really going on here:
“In the House, the view of [California Rep. Henry] Waxman and [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi is that we’ve waited two generations to get health care passed, and the 20 or 40 members of Congress who are going to lose their seats as a result are transitional players at best,” he said.Read more at coldfury.com

Health care takeover roll call vote — and what GOP Rep. Joseph Cao got from Obama

Well, since he was elected, Cao has backed the S-CHIP expansion, the 8 billion IMF bailout, and the omni-waste spending bill. And he voted to rebuke GOP Rep. Joe Wilson for calling out President Obama on his health care lies.

That is a steep price to pay for Rep. William Jefferson’s removal.

Can’t the GOP do better?

The final 220-215 roll call vote on passage of the House Dems’ government health care takeover bill is here.

And here is the 240-194 roll call vote on the Stupak amendment to extend the ban on federal abortion subsidies to Obamacare/Pelosicare.

Thanks to Doug Powers for filling in while I spoke at the Foundation for Life event in Sugar Land, Texas tonight. What an incredible juxtaposition it was — meeting and talking with the true agents of Hope and Change, the true guardians of innocent life, and the true advocates for women and children outside the Beltway as the Democrat majority inside the Beltway rammed the massive, job-killing, high-taxing, bureaucracy-multiplying, generational debt-piling health care monstrosity down America’s throat.

One Republican voted for Pelosicare: GOP Rep. Anh (Joseph) Cao of Louisiana.

Yes, he’s the one who took over corruptocrat Democrat William Jefferson’s seat.
I had reservations about him on election night because of his soft-on-immigration views.Read more at michellemalkin.com

The Value-Added Tax: Financing the Road to Serfdom

Amplifyd from www.suitablyflip.com

Sure, trillion-dollar spending sprees are fun, but they do require soaking up a fair bit of the GDP not already surrendered to the government.  Ever the problem solvers, Nancy Pelosi and the Obama administration are eyeing a fresh taxpayer vein that just might help finance skyrocketing spending well into the future.

Dan Mitchell from the Center for Freedom and Prosperity explores the subsequent potential for an exciting plunge into a degree of statism to blush industrialized Europe.

If government-run healthcare is approved, it is very likely that politicians will then look for a new revenue source to finance all the new spending that inevitably will follow. Unfortunately, that means a value-added tax (VAT) will be high on the list. Indeed, the VAT recently has been favorably mentioned by powerful political figures and key Obama allies such as the Co-Chairman of his transition team and the Speaker of the House.

The VAT would be great news for the political insiders and belteway elite. A  brand new source of revenue would mean more money for them to spend and a new set of  loopholes to swap for campaign cash and lobbying fees.  But as I explain in this new video from the Center for Freedom and Prosperity,  the evidence from Europe unambiguously suggests that a VAT will dramatically increase the burden of government.  That’s good for Washington, but bad for America.

It’s worth noting that even if the politicians are unsuccessful in their campaign to take over the health care system, there will be a VAT fight at some point in the next few years. This will be a Armageddon moment for proponents of limited government. Defeating a VAT is not a sufficient condition for controlling the size of government, but it surely is a necessarry condition.

Some of you may wonder whether a VAT is acceptable as a total replacement for the current income tax. In another video, comparing the flat tax and national sales tax, I explain that a low-rate, consumption-base system would be great. But I don’t want that kind of tax in addition to the current internal revenue code.  And that is exactly what Obama, Reid, Pelosi, et al, have in mind.

Three Historical Lessons to Help the President Cope

The President of the United States, when confronted with major challenges and decisions, did what most Democrats do when challenged – He made plans to leave town.  Flying to Denmark to pitch the 2012 Olympic Selection Committee on behalf of his semi-native Chicago, Obama will leave behind a myriad of problems requiring leadership.  Apparently believing press reports that His words are leadership enough, the President thought he could take a ride on Air Force One and go back to Europe for a day to receive the usual leftist adoration.

The President this morning appears confronted by both domestic and international crises.  Obama’s pick for General of the Afghanistan war (Obama’s ‘real’ war as opposed to George W. Bush’s Iraq war),  General Stanley McChrystal has expressed concern that the Prez will want to pull out of Afghanistan rather than fight the enemy there.  The Iranians – shaking in their shoes after Obama’s words over the weekend – Read more at www.conservativeblog.thewebinfocenter.com

continued testing its missiles designed to deliver nuclear war heads to Tel Aviv.   And the health care takeover is losing momentum.  These issues require hard work for a hardened politician.  Most that want to be President relish these days as the chance to make a real difference for the country.  Obama chooses a flight to Copenhagen. Defense Secretary Gates furthered the concern over Afghanistan on the Sunday talk shows by pointing out that leaving that basket-case of a country would allow the Taliban and Al Qaida to regroup, rearm and re-attack the American homeland.  Should that occur, of course the US military would be sent back into Afghanistan to hunt bad guys – at least until the next leftist liberal was elected President.  The Prez though, is reluctant to get into a war that can’t be quickly won.

The President’s preferred choice may be to fight the War on Terror on the streets of American cities rather than Afghanistan.   Reasoning that we wouldn’t have to pay transportation costs to get troops to a distant land, we could just fight the bad guys here.    Obama’s waffling on making any kind of decision on the Afghan war leaves most observers wondering – what in the world is the President looking for?  General McChrystal himself hasn’t been allowed a meeting with the President over this serious situation in over two months.

And then there is Iran.  The Muslim oligarchy that runs Iran understands that Obama’s options are limited.  And the options the President has are ones He will almost certainly never use.  The laughter in Tehran has almost died down after Obama’s statement that Iran must comply with world opinion or ‘face the consequences.’  Iran’s Russian and Chinese friends will ensure that these consequences will be of little worth.  Obama’s only recourse is to threaten unilateral military action and be prepared to use it.  Unfortunately for the free world, Obama doesn’t believe in military action, preferring instead to rely on the utterly worthless and increasingly contemptible United Nations.    Israel on the other hand – very much believes that its own existence is worth defending and will probably enact some military action of its own when it becomes clear that the United States won’t.

Afghanistan: Lefties are quick to draw comparisons to the lessons of Vietnam and conclude that the US should not be drawn into a land war.

Iran: History’s lesson on this can be summed up in a word and a date; Munich, 1938.  Allowing Hitler to complete a peaceful takeover of the Sudetenland and portions of Czechoslovakia (you libs will have to look this up)

Health Care: One doesn’t have to go too far back in history to learn a few lessons on this one.  In fact, all Obama has to do is call in his Secretary of State for a heart to heart about what went wrong the last time.
