A cool feature in Windows 7 Media Center is the ability to listen to local FM radio. But what if you don’t have a tuner card that supports a connected radio antenna? The RadioTime plugin solves the problem by allowing access to thousands of online radio stations.

With the RadioTime plugin for Windows Media Center, you’ll have access to over 100,000 online radio stations from around the world. Their guide is broken down into different categories such as Talk Radio, Music Radio, Sports Radio and more. It’s completely free, but does require registration to save preset stations.

RadioTime

It works with Media Center in XP, Vista, and Windows 7 (which we’re demonstrating here). When installing it for Windows 7, make sure to click the Installer link below the “Get It Now – Free” button as the installer works best for the new OS.

“Tell Me More”

The software then trawls Google News, Yahoo News or other news aggregators to find related articles. These are analysed in the same way as the original story so that a comparison can be made to uncover any information not included in the initial article.

Unlike existing news aggregators or “related stories” features, the new service, called Tell Me More, presents only fresh details, without repeating information in the original story.

“You see it and you immediately want to play with it,” says Daniel Sinker, who teaches online journalism at Columbia College Chicago and has no ties to the software. “It does exactly what an active news consumer wants the internet to do: it brings you new ideas and perspectives, and it brings them to you quickly.”

Statistical reading

Tell Me More is web service built on a combination of open source software and software developed by the Intelligent Information Laboratory at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

It characterises the article being read based on the frequency of individual words in it, and also by identifying named entities such as people, cities and organisations, and numbered quantities such as dollar amounts.

    Who Wants Ultra-Fast Broadband?

    Hornets' nest

It's reminiscent of the way Google barged into the mobile and wireless arena with ideas for major changes to the way we buy cellphones and airtime, similarly alienating the people it needs on its side.

That earned Google's CEO Eric Schmidt a hostile reception from cellphone executives at an event earlier this week.

Google recently announced it will attempt to provide a select group of US communities with internet access at an unprecedentedly high rate of 1 gigabit per second –

But although the Googlers are sure that such a speed boost is A Good Thing, even product managers Minnie Ingersoll and James Kelly admit they don’t know what people will do with such capacity.

And yet these services are still theoretical. While right now having your broadband speed quadruple might change your life, having it increase hundredfold would probably just deliver more of the same

Rather than being aimed at consumers, Google’s initiative is meant to push the telecoms firms that connect Google with its customers to raise the bar on the transmission technologies they invest in next. The US Federal Communications Commission is probably also a target, as it prepares to file its National Broadband Plan to boost the nation’s broadband connectivity with Congress next month.
