Louisa Ball has rare SLEEPING BEAUTY ILLNESS

merriemarie says:

Soon the youngster was out like a light for as long as ten days at a time.

Surveyor Richard, 44, says: "It was very hard to wake her but we knew we had to give her food and water and get her to the toilet before she fell asleep again."

Doctors at the family's local hospital in Worthing, West Suusex, examined Louisa but told her mum and dad they had no idea ... read more

Louise

PRETTY Louisa Ball is known to her family and friends as Sleeping Beauty… but there the fairytale ends.

For the teenager suffers from a very rare disorder that means she can drop off for up to TWO WEEKS at a time.

She has even snoozed through an ENTIRE FAMILY HOLIDAY and missed school exams because of incurable Kleine-Levin Syndrome. Her parents Lottie and Richard have to force her awake to feed her and stop her from starving. “I’m so upset about having this illness because I know there’s so much I’m missing out on,” says Louisa, 15, whose disorder affects only about 1,000 PEOPLE worldwide.

“I can never remember anything when I wake up. I think, ‘Why has this happened to me’.”

The youngster’s supersnoozes began after a bout of flu in 2008.

NO FAIRYTALE: With family

“She started falling asleep at school and at home. Even when she was awake she was rambling about things as if she was talking in her sleep,” says Lottie, 45. “It really scared us.”

We Are Doomed

merriemarie says:

Nicholas Ostler, in Empires of the Word, puts it down to the great and terrible plague that ravaged Europe in the mid-sixth century. The English areas, and the Celts living under English overlords, were less affected, he argues, for social and economic reasons (e.g. fewer trade links with southern Europe).

Now here’s F. W. Brownlow of Mt. Holyoke Col... read more

One of my great pleasures at the beginning of every month is to read John Derbyshire’s monthly Diary over at NRO.  It’s a rich buffet of commentary, analysis, math, and information presented with wit and true conservative pessimism.  John’s a wonderful writer as this snippet from his January Diary proves:

Killer English One of the great mysteries of history is: Why do the English speak English? At the time the English (speakers of low-German dialects from Europe’s North Sea coasts) showed up in the middle fifth century A.D., Britain had two languages well established: Latin, which had been the administrative language of Roman Britannia for 400 years, and Brythonic, a Celtic tongue spoken by the common people for somewhat longer. Both were wiped out by English: Latin completely, so far as everyday usage was concerned, Brythonic surviving only in the wild west of Britain, where it gradually morphed into Welsh.

The Green Police Are Already Here

In San Fransisco, at least.
Gavin Newsom, Mayor of San Francisco, made it a reality a couple of years ago. The mandation of people separating out their recyclables and compost material from the trash

The potential for fines is meant to increase awareness and add a sense of urgency to the matter, but they will only be implemented after repeated notices and phone calls. In 2004, a Congressional effort to limit the use of MCCs was defeated by a consortium of financial institutions, immigrants’ rights groups, consumer groups, and many others. These organizations had formed a loose coalition to defeat, again, limitations on the use of consular ID cards by banks, credit unions, thrifts and other financial institutions.
By a vote of 222 to 177, the House passed a bipartisan amendment (HA 754), introduced by Representatives Barney Frank (D-MA), Pastor (D-AZ), Hinojosa (D-TX), Oxley (R-OH) and Kolbe (R-AZ). It prohibited the Treasury Dept. from implementing regulations regarding the acceptance of FCCs by financial institutions.
But prior to that hearing, the FBI was adamantly opposed to the use of MCCs as valid identification. Assistant Director Steve McCraw’s testimony before Congress in 2003 was blunt: “…consular ID cards are primarily being utilized by illegal aliens in the United States.

Did Democrat Open Border Policies Touch Off the Mortgage Meltdown?

Last year the Norfolk Crime Examiner featured a startling interview with a mortgage contractor who “personally audited thousands of sub prime loans.”
“Over 50% of the subprimes were for cash-out refi’s. Regardless of the loan criteria used to pull random samplings for audits, the majority of the last names were Hispanic. The loans I audited were primarily in CA, NV, AZ, FL, CO, compare those to the states with the highest number of foreclosures [and] illegal aliens.”

A June 2007 MarketWatch article confirmed that
cash-out refi’s hit a 16-year high in late 2006
in section 326(b) of the USA Patriot Act is a provision that allows US banks to accept Mexican Matricula Consular cards (MCCs) as a valid form of ID for opening bank accounts.”
Congress ordered American banks to recognize these Mexican-issued cards
members of the House Judiciary Committee confirm that Mexican banks do not accept Matricula Consular cards as valid identification

New Errors In IPCC Climate Change Report

merriemarie says:

Researchers insist the errors are minor and do not impact on the overall conclusions about climate change.

However, senior scientists are now expressing concern at the way the IPCC compiles its reports and have hit out at the panel’s use of so-called “grey literature” — evidence from sources that have not been subjected to scientific scrutiny.

The United Nations panel on climate change is facing fresh criticism today as The Sunday Telegraph reveals new factual errors and poor sources of evidence in its influential report to government leaders.

By Richard Gray and Ben Leach
  • The publication of inaccurate data on the potential of wave power to produce electricity around the world, which was wrongly attributed to the website of a commercial wave-energy company.
  • New examples of statements based on student dissertations, two of which were unpublished.
  • More claims which were based on reports produced by environmental pressure groups.

Last weekend, this paper revealed that the panel had based claims about disappearing mountain ice on anecdotal evidence in a student’s dissertation and an article in a mountaineering magazine.

And on Friday, it emerged that the IPCC’s panel had wrongly reported that more than half of the Netherlands was below sea level because it had failed to check information supplied by a Dutch government agency.

Obama Could Dump Biden for Clinton as VP in 2012

merriemarie says:

of Clinton admirers, give Obama more of a pragmatic luster, and shunt the gaffe-prone Biden aside. And it would theoretically discourage Clinton, a former senator from New York, from challenging Obama in the 2012 primaries, Democratic insiders say, because as vice president she would be considered Obama's heir for 2016. Democratic strategists say Obama doesn’t need Biden for foreign policy issues anymore

Posted February 5, 2010

Democratic strategists say that if President Obama’s re-election prospects look shaky, he could dump Vice President Joe Biden from the 2012 national ticket and choose Hillary Clinton as his vice presidential running mate.

It’s inside-Washington speculation at this point, but the strategists make a good case for such a shift. “Biden was named in the first place to shore up Obama on foreign policy issues, and Obama doesn’t need that anymore,” says a former Clinton adviser. That’s because Obama has learned the ropes and has assembled a strong foreign policy and national security team including Robert Gates as defense secretary, Jim Jones as White House national security adviser, and Hillary Clinton as secretary of state.

Elevating Clinton to the vice presidential slot would accomplish several objectives: It would appeal to female voters and the still-powerful cadreRead more at www.usnews.com

Obama Sets Trap for Republicans

merriemarie says:

No matter what the Democrats say to the Republicans or anything that they try to put in there, it would only be a lie. They would sneak things in that none of us want. I believe we should wait until all of them are voted out. We get people in there who care about America and believe in the Constitution and then we can listen to them about health care.

I want to come back and have, uh, a large meeting, Republicans AND Democrats, to go through systematically all the best ideas that are out there and move it forward.
Obama realizes health care dead on Capitol Hill. Obama not giving up! He went to the DNC fundraiser over the weekend, Saturday night I guess, and he said “We’re not giving up on this, gang!”
A clear majority of people do not want it, and they stopped it.  This is no time for bipartisanship
“Bipartisanship” simply means Republicans compromising their core beliefs to agree with Democrats
Obama then condescends by explaining how democracy works.  And that’s where he said, “I want to come back after the congressional recess, have a large meeting, Republicans, Democrats, go through systematically all the best ideas that are out there.” You don’t have to have a meeting.  This is what statists do: They have meetings.
